2019 Wearable Device Challenge Winners

This year’s Wearable Device Challenge was held on April 2 at NC State University’s Hunt Library. Having participated remotely in the past two years, for the first time ever, Penn State also hosted its own competition on May 16 at Happy Valley Launchbox. The Wearable Device Challenge highlights ASSIST’s educational outreach programs and is one of the most popular competitions among middle and high school students. Overall, nine middle school and six high school teams competed at NC State, while Penn State hosted four middle school and three high school teams. Total student participation increased from 117 in 2018 to 121 in 2019.

Middle School:

1. Team Splexa from Hillburn Academy
2. Tie: Team Karn from Hillburn Academy and the Cougar SPF Team from Zebulon G&T Middle School
3. Concussion Cougars from Zebulon G&T Middle School

High School:

2. EZRider from Wake STEM Early College HS

Penn State – Winners

• Middle School: Pitch counter 3000 (a pressure sensor in a catcher’s glove to count pitches)
• High School: EchoVision (a proximity sensor mounted on glasses to help the visually impaired)
• Judges’ Choice: Glowy Vest (a safety vest designed to light up when it gets dark – the team was comprised of 3^rd and 4^th graders!)
