Five Young Scholars and six teachers in the RET (Research Experiences for Teachers) program have joined ASSIST during the summer. This 6-week program highlights ASSIST’s pre-college outreach focusing on local NC schools.
Similar to ASSIST’s summer REU program (Research Experiences for Undergraduates), both Young Scholars and RETs conduct their own research, participate in field trips, and further their knowledge of nanotechnology. At the end of the 6-week program, they will present their research at a research symposium on July 26. Additionally, all RETs develop lesson plans related to their research to implement in their classrooms the following academic year.
For the first time since the start of both programs, young scholars and RETs are also writing weekly blogs with accompanying social media captions about their day to day activities. All ASSIST social media channels will feature their work in the coming weeks.
RETs and young scholars are mentored by ASSIST graduate students and Education Director & Operations Manager, Dr. Elena Veety.
